Goldman: New iPods Due Soon, Another Reason to Own Apple
posted on: August 30, 2007 | about stocks: AAPL

Apple shares jumped 5.7% after Goldman Sachs analyst David Bailey predicted Apple will launch a "full line-up of revamped iPods with significantly greater functionality... including the much-anticipated full-screen video iPod" in time for the holiday season, providing "another reason to own the stock." The note cites invitations Apple sent for a product launch September 5th, which bear the title "The beat goes on" and an image of a silhouetted man dancing while listening to an iPod. Bailey expects that with a new line, Apple will sell at least another 10.5 million iPods during the present quarter, and 19.8 million in Q4. The release of new iPods has been predicted by technology buffs, including industry consultant Carl Howe (full note). The remake comes in the face of growing competition to Apple's market-dominating iTunes online music store. Nokia Wednesday unveiled a new online music store and high-end handsets (full story). Earlierthis month, Viacom's MTV Networks online music store joined with RealNetworks (full story), and Univeral Music has recently begun testing DRM-free music sales through Amazon, Wal-Mart and Google (full story). But to take Apple on, Creative Strategies' Tim Bajarin says, any store will have to move its music "to the devices that consumers really want, and that's where Apple kind of stays ahead of everybody." ITunes music sales represent approximately 11% of Apple's $22 billion revenue, and drive iPod sales. It last revamped the iPod a year ago when it boosted storage to 80 gigabytes, and rolled out a thinner iPod nano and Shuffle.

Klipsch's IMAGE earphones deemed "world's smallest"

While JAYS' q-JAYS claimed to be the "smallest earphones on the market" just days ago, we doubt Klipsch would be willing to agree. Turns out, the firm's IMAGE earbuds are also proclaiming that they are the "world's smallest and lightest in-ear earphones," and while we haven't seen the ruler busted out just yet, we fear it may be needed to settle this obvious conflict. Regardless, these 'buds utilize patent-pending Contour Ear Gels, KG926 balanced micro-armatures, aluminum bodies that are finished in anodized copper, and come with 50-inch long vinyl cables. Ready for a November release, the IMAGE earphones will ring up at $349 and will arrive with a carrying case and pouch, a 1/4-inch / airline adapter, five sets of ear gels, and a cleaning tool to boot. Sony's NWZ-A810 and NWZ-S610 now really, really official and ATRAC free

So long ATRAC, hello NWZ-A810 and NWZ-S610 Sony Walkmans. The A810 we've seen before, twice in fact, but this is the first time the S610 (pictured) has wiggled free from the rumor mill all dolled-up in full specs and pricing. The S610 series packs the same QVGA resolution in a slightly smaller 1.8-inch display and still one-ups the A810 with an FM tuner bunged inside. Both support USB Mass Storage file transfer, AVC (H.264/AVC) and MPEG-4 encoded video, and AAC, MP3 and DRM'd WMA audio formats without bothering us with any of that icky ATRAC stuff or their much maligned SonicStage software. Sony's also making nice by bringing their B100 series of Walkman DAPs to town in 1GB ($60) and 2GB ($80) models. The S610 series starts at $120 for 2GB on up to $210 for the 8GB compared to a $140 to $230 range for the same capacity A810 models. All available in September, pre-sales now.

Not that anyone was impatiently refreshing in anticipation of this news, but Kodak just made their trio of leaked EasyShare cameras official. We mean really, really, super official with pricing and dates as opposed to the information gleaned off their site courtesy of Google's cache. The $300 V1253, $250 V1233, and $300 Z812 IS are all available now. They're also launching their $100 Easyshare HDTV dock with remote control for a quick and dirty TV hookup along with a 10-inch SV1011 digital picture frame with 800 x 480 resolution for $200. See, you don't know everything.
